We get it. Accidents can be overwhelming.
But the process becomes just a bit easier if you know what to do. The guide below is a to-do list for after an accident. Save it, keep it handy and send it to a friend or family member so they can be informed.
And if you find yourself in an accident: it’s ok. Take a deep breath, we’re here for you.
1. Call the police
A police report is crucial in documenting the accident. Police reports contain details such as where the accident happened, license plate numbers, the name of the parties involved and their insurance companies. A police officer can also help with rerouting traffic, should that be needed.
2. Swap information
Take a picture of the other driver’s insurance card and license or write it down. If they don’t have an insurance card, get their name, phone number, insurance company name, and policy number. Provide your information to the other driver as well.
3. Go to a medical facility
Go to a hospital and get your injuries looked after right away whether it is in an ambulance or by car! Even if your injuries don’t seem severe, you should always go to a medical facility following an accident. Some injuries are internal and can cause major problems in a matter or hours so be sure to report any discomfort or hurt in your body. It’s important to get proper testing and have your injuries documented in a medical report.
4. Call a lawyer
Call a lawyer and set up a consultation appointment. Let them know what happened and where you went for treatment. Your lawyer will know the best way forward. We at MacArthur Moten P.C. can help you through the after-accident process. Call us at (314)-535-2948 to tell us about your case.
5. Follow up with any referrals or recommended treatment plans
Be it physical rehab, visiting a chiropractor, or even resting, it’s important to take your health seriously and follow instructions from a licensed provider. After your hospital visit, you may walk away with a referral to a specialist or you may be asked to visit another doctors office follow-up on severe injuries. Be sure to thoroughly follow any treatment plans that you have been given so that you can heal!
6. Leave things to your lawyer
While you heal and focus on life outside of the accident, let your lawyer work on your case. Let us take care of the insurance companies involved. Your lawyer will contact the insurance company of the other person or people involved, they’ll obtain the medical and police records, and will do the work needed to get you money your entitled to based on your case: your medical bills, extent of injuries, time off work due to your injuries and more.
